AI and Power Tools

Productivity & Workflow

As I write this, two AIs are at work for me.

One is debugging a problem I ran into while trying to make a new order form on my website. Another is building an automation in FluentCRM.

Since these are the two items most pressing on my to-do list, and I cannot work on them myself at the moment, I am writing this blog post.

Welcome to the future.

I just put down my keyboard to return to one of the agents who needed me to answer a question before I could continue. Back now.

If the Internet sends you the same stuff it sends me, you’ve been inundated with Claude Code and how transformative it is for software development. It is less known how powerful of a productivity tool it is.

It is currently acting as a “chief of staff/COO” in my business.

It can… well, I’ve had a hard time finding something it can’t do.

Right now it is:

  • Syncing up with me daily to inform me of tasks, events, and important emails
  • Helping me respond to emails
  • Strategizing marketing efforts
  • Helping me execute on marketing efforts
  • Running my entire content repurposing and distribution strategy
  • Amazingly, helping me automate WordPress troubleshooting by controlling my browser
  • Building apps
  • And just about everything else.

Suffice it to say, we’re well beyond chatbots at this point. The tools can do far more than give you ideas, be your therapist, or write your content.

I’m reminded of an old truism: You need the right tool for the right job.

People ask, “What’s your favorite AI tool? Which one do you find yourself using the most?” etc. I think that is the wrong question.

A better question is: What do you need to get done?

For example, I am finding that:

  • Grok is the best I’ve found for normal, everyday use and conversational research needs.
  • Gemini is wonderful at working with images (Nano Banana), vibe coding products (Google AI Studio), etc.
  • Claude is fantastic at working in large code bases and doing “real” agentic software development (which is the context for my chief of staff as well – will explain at some point).

A buddy of mine owns a company called Magai that allows you to use many different models all for the same price. You should absolutely use them! If you are going to be chatting with an AI or doing image generation, you should use Dustin instead of these other companies because he will save you tons of money.

What I’m beginning to realize (and h/t to MKBHD for the idea) is that more important for the AI companies than access to the models is the application of their models in real-world scenarios.

X user signüll nicely captured the sentiment in a reaction to Anthropic’s release of Claude Cowork:

Anthropic is giving a clear signal: If you’re doing knowledge work, we have the toolset you need.

Their announcement came literally on the heels of Apple’s announcement that the new Siri would use Gemini — not ChatGPT — as its foundation model.

OpenAI is not in my newsfeed much these days. But they have a first-mover advantage and the “normies” on their side. AI is ChatGPT much like tissues are Kleenex, so they will not be easily dethroned. Nor must they be!

Perhaps their place in the market is everyday integration through practical use cases like the collaboration with Jony Ive’s design firm.

Exploring what AI can do for you will involve a deep dive into the available tool sets and the workflows you need to be productive. As I’ve explored in my thoughts on using AI extensively, these tools represent a fundamental shift in how we approach creative and analytical work. The efficiency gains from text-based tools demonstrate how AI can transform our daily work processes.

You should start yesterday figuring this out.
