Be willing to share how the sausage is made

Marketing & Writing

I’ve recently started working with a new client in my marketing studio.

We had a classic conversation the other day, during an onboarding call. She was concerned that, if she put content out into the world that explained her beliefs, concepts, and ideas, no one would have any reason to hire her or purchase her services.

Can you relate? Have you ever wrestled with that same issue?

The problem is this thinking is dangerous—and false, to boot. It misunderstands something fundamental about how humans think. It also fails to consider that humans value TRUST more than anything else these days.

Let’s talk about it.

First of all, you are a human, I can almost guarantee it 🙂 So, you tell me: as I write this, it is 2021. When you are looking to purchase a new product or service, what do you do? Do you purchase it Willy Nilly without any context? Or do you do your due diligence and research?

If you’re like every other human, you research.. so if there’s no content to research, what info do you have to go on? If you’re LUCKY, someone who’s done business with you will have said something nice about you in public. But come on! Beyond that, what reason have you given them to do business with you?

They need to know what you believe. They need to know what you can do. They need to know that YOU know your stuff. Which leads me to the next topic…

Trust.

Do I even need to say any more? The classic advice is still true—people do business with those they know, like, and TRUST. Frankly, trust is the only currency that really REALLY matters.

I have spoken. It is the way.

Start today sharing what you know. Here’s a simple case study, per Jason Fried:

What do chefs know that most businesses don’t? How come world class chefs know well enough to write books, show up on TV, etc,  promoting their secret recipes? The simple lesson: Where’s your cookbook? Start writing. Start filming. Start recording.

You won’t regret it.
