The AI revolution produced an unexpected delight: the vindication of text as king.

You may think it strange I’d say that in a world where short video dominates, but consider:

1. Using text, one can now create realistic videos. I predict public opinion will soon dethrone video as the most authentic mode of expression.

2. Writing has been around for thousands of years; it ain’t going anywhere.

3. People still want to be _convinced_ through logic and argument. Not all, but many. This often happens through persuasive, longform writing. The art of [asking the right questions to guide rather than manipulate](https://steveschramm.co/guiding-questions-leading-questions/) becomes crucial in this process of genuine persuasion.

4. Writing clarifies thinking. I almost never say something (at least not articulated well) unless I’ve “thought” about it through my fingertips first. There’s something profound about [the power of simply writing words](https://steveschramm.co/the-power-of-simply-writing-words/) that transforms scattered thoughts into coherent ideas.

5. You can build _anything_ digital now using text. Fire up Google AI Studio or Claude Code. You’ll see. This revolution in text-based [content creation](https://steveschramm.co/content-is-for-using-not-abusing/) has democratized digital development in ways we’re only beginning to understand. As I’ve explored in my thoughts on [using AI extensively as a Christian](https://steveschramm.co/why-as-a-christian-i-use-ai-extensively/), these tools represent a fundamental shift in how we approach creative and analytical work.

6. Text is way more efficient. WAY more. My browser, Dia, allows me to enter a keyboard shortcut and start chatting with a YouTube video. The other day, I saved myself 30 minutes by asking a question about a video instead of watching it. Got a GREAT idea from the interaction. Fired up Gemini Pro. And now have a FANTASTIC new software tool addition coming soon to my [Getting Started with Subscription Web Design course](https://steveschramm.co/the-top-3-frustrations-with-todo-apps-and-how-i-plan-to-fix-them-in-2026/). This process would have taken weeks just a few months ago. This efficiency in reflecting on our accomplishments and progress demonstrates how text-based tools can transform our daily work processes.

7. Writing, done well, is beautiful. Perhaps not mine, though I try. Excellent prose is itself worthy of admiration. Just as [good design removes obstacles and serves a purpose](https://steveschramm.co/design-is-for-overcoming-obstacles/), good writing removes barriers to understanding and serves the reader’s needs.

In short, I think the videoification of the Internet sucked for writers. We’ve been told writing is “lesser than” video. The number of blog feeds that gave way to a video podcast in the past 10 years is staggering. This shift away from written content often stems from [the tendency to chase new trends rather than recognizing the enduring value of proven methods](https://steveschramm.co/old-things-new-again/).

But phooey to all of it. It’s all words. And the written word is alive and well.

I like podcasting. I like making videos. But I _love_ writing. This shift in perspective reminds me of the importance of [reflecting on what we’ve accomplished](https://steveschramm.co/when-the-rearview-is-useful/) rather than constantly chasing the next trend. When we focus on [producing more meaningful content rather than consuming endlessly](https://steveschramm.co/less-content-more-content/), we discover the true power of the written word. There’s something timeless about [sharing ideas through writing](https://steveschramm.co/the-blog-a-place-to-share-your-ideas/) that connects us across time and space in ways other mediums simply cannot match. For those who understand the importance of persistence in developing our craft, this ancient art form continues to reward dedicated practitioners.

And that’s not only okay, it’s a serious superpower. Sometimes we need to recognize that [what got us here won’t get us there](https://steveschramm.co/of-vehicles-and-visions/), but in the case of writing, the opposite is true—this ancient technology continues to be our most powerful vehicle for sharing complex ideas and building meaningful connections. For those of us who understand [the importance of persistence in developing our craft](https://steveschramm.co/be-willing-to-suck-bad/), writing remains one of the most rewarding skills we can cultivate. The key is [taking time to reflect on our progress and accomplishments](https://steveschramm.co/when-the-rearview-is-useful/) rather than constantly seeking the next shiny tool or platform.
